Marie Winn talks about how family
ties are growing weaker because of television sets. When television sets first
came out. An average of only one
television set were in a household because television were expensive. When 2000
came around a household had two or more television sets. This made family time
different from when television first came out. Couple of the reasons is the dad
comes home and wants to have a relaxing dinner with his wife so they send the
kids to watch television. Television changed the quality of life. For example
an only child at school is excluding herself from making friends and group
activities. The teacher asks the mother why is she like this? The mother
replies “when the busy day comes to an end she watches television while I make
dinner.” The teacher replies “well why won’t she help you make dinner so you
guys can connect? The mother replies, “well she will miss her television
program.” When did a television program become more important than family time?
Television also changed family rituals. A young woman was telling about her family’s
get together before television came out. The children were playing and the
parents were mingling. Than after television came out everyone gathered around
the set and there was no longer the connection like it once was. Television
also breaks the connection between real people. It is much more easier to have
a one sided connection with a person in the television than a person in real
life. Because the person in the television doesn’t have feedback compared to a
real person.
Being in front of the television
set all day is not a good habit to get into. Watching television all day
results in procrastination of doing what needs to get done. There are a couple factors that are going on
while watching television. Some could be on a social media account while
watching television. This relates to my topic of social media and
procrastination because people no longer watch videos on television they watch
it over the Internet and have comments on them that everyone can see.
